As the clock turns and we step into 2025, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind that was last year. 2024 wasn’t just another year—it was a journey filled with challenges, revelations, and growth that I never imagined possible. Looking back now, I can say with gratitude and awe that the struggles I faced have shaped me into the person I am today.
A year ago, if someone had told me I’d be homeschooling my youngest child, I would have laughed it off. Homeschooling was never on my radar, yet here I am, navigating lesson plans, science experiments, and countless questions with a mix of exhaustion and pride. What started as a daunting challenge became one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It taught me patience, adaptability, and how to view learning as a shared journey, not just a task to complete. My child’s curiosity and growth have been a source of joy and inspiration, and I’ve discovered strengths in myself that I didn’t know existed.
Then there’s my running journey—something I couldn’t have envisioned even a few years ago. I went from hesitant beginner to placing in the top 10 of every 5k race I entered last year. Running has become more than a physical challenge; it’s a metaphor for perseverance. Every mile, every finish line, taught me that with consistency and belief in myself, I could surpass limits I didn’t even know I had. At 40, I feel healthier and stronger than ever, a testament to the transformative power of setting goals and staying committed.
But 2024 wasn’t just about personal milestones. It was a year marked by war, pain, and suffering in the world. Watching others endure unimaginable hardships while I lived in safety and comfort was a humbling and sobering experience. I often felt helpless, overwhelmed by the contrast between my blessings and the struggles others faced. Yet, this contrast was also a profound reminder of what truly matters: faith, compassion, and the tests of this life.
Islam teaches us that this life is a test, and last year’s events were a stark reminder of that truth. The suffering I witnessed strengthened my resolve to be more grateful, more giving, and more grounded in my faith. It opened my eyes to the importance of using my blessings to help others and to live with purpose and intention. Gratitude became my anchor, keeping me steady in the storm of emotions.
Turning 40 didn’t feel like a milestone to dread; it felt like a celebration of resilience and growth. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and the person I’m becoming. I’ve learned to embrace the struggles and find meaning in them. I’ve learned that even when life feels impossibly hard, the strength to endure and grow is always within reach.
As I step into 2025, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and hope. I’m carrying the lessons of 2024 with me: the joy of unexpected journeys, the strength found in perseverance, and the profound importance of faith and compassion. Here’s to another year of growth, resilience, and making the most of this beautiful, fleeting life.
To everyone reading this, may your struggles shape you, your blessings inspire you, and your faith guide you. Happy New Year.
